RGB through time
Description
I decided to make a simple tribute to Ruth Bade Ginsburg (aka RBG), due to her passing this week.
Reflection
I started out wanting to create a clock related to my cat's movements over the course of the day. They sleep in various places - different pieces of furniture, my lap, etc. Sort of whimsical and cute.
I don't think this clock tells time at all. I'm not sure if that is ok for the assignment, but I did feel like making a clock with quotes that don't relate to time at all necessarily may be a novel way of apporaching this assignment. It reminds me a bit of those "quote a day" calendars, where there is inspiration in each entry. We all need a bit of inspiration these days, especially freom this incredible woman.
To me, the work I create is more interesting and meaningful if the subject chosen is important to the artist. This isn't the prettiest piece I've done, nor is it the most fun, but I felt a sense of catharsis in mourning her death in this way. I also was able to read her quotes and life story, make art with text, and not think of what's to come...
Design Process
I started out wanting to create a clock related to my cat's movements over the course of the day. But I realized that, while cute, what I was most thinking about this week and feeling awfully sad about was related to the ongoing political situation in the U.S and the world. I have sketches of the project with my cat I could share but I didn't think that was as meaningful of a project so I scrapped it. (Hope it's ok that I didn't follow the rules)
I also wanted to add some text that popped up on the screen to remind us of what a rebel she was, one way she inspired (through dissent), and how her strong opinions are still so relevant today, with the current situation of the world.
In my new project, I started with an idea to use display some of her quotes. At first I wanted to make her quotes related to a the cases across her life. But not exactly knowing how to use dates as numbers, and wanting to make a rotation similar to a clock, I decided to make the quotes rotate, and end with a remembrance at the end of the day. I hadn't made a sketch with text yet, so I thought it could also interesting to try using text vs drawing shapes.
I also made the colors and background fade to darkness to show that her life was ending, like the day ends and becomes dark.
I also wanted to add an "easter egg" that popped up on the screen for part of tht time, to remind us of what a rebel she was, one way she inspired (through dissent), and how her strong opinions are still so relevant today, with the current political situation in the US.
There are many things I can't quite do easily yet with code and may also just run out of time to complete in the time given for the assignment and the amount of time I can spend on this. I wanted to put a countdown for how many days there were until election day, but I couldn't find documentation on how to use the date as a number to subtract from today's date. If I get the time and figure it out, I will add it at a later date.
